Our story: LABAM
In July 1949, Mr. Oreste Cavalca founded LABAM (High Fashion Buttons Artistic Processing) in Parma. He comes from significant experience gained in the micro-mechanical sector; this previous youth experience will be fundamental to be able to build and modify the first machinery and the first equipment suitable for the processing of resins. Thus began the long history of our company.
We are talking about the very first post-war period, when Italy was beginning its history of restoration and everything was difficult to find, so much so that the first small "Plexiglass plates" used by LABAM for the production of its buttons came from the "domes" of military aircraft war remnants.
The fashion market begins to seriously appreciate the LABAM Buttons, and so other materials are added to the Plexiglass, such as bakelite, galalite, cellulose acetate, rhodoid, natural horn etc...
All the processing steps are largely carried out manually. The sales market is retail and mainly local. LABAM extends its sales market; some customers are also present in the main Italian cities.
During this period, the methodologies and manufacturing processes were perfected, in order to raise the quality level of the production. The "taste" of the collections is refined; the stylistic creations are born from the direct collaboration of the owner, who in addition to following his innate good taste, interprets the needs and requests of qualified customers with extreme attention.
The "response" from customers is lively; the need for space increases, so an adjoining room is added to the laboratory, which brings the covered area to 500 square meters.
LABAM is increasingly recognized for its ability to grasp and interpret market needs and trends. A lot of fashion houses, ateliers and tailors of the period, establish an active collaboration with LABAM. In the same period, it was decided to turn more interest to foreign markets and to the international circuit. Thus, the first relationships with customers are established in some countries of primary commercial importance.
Increasing importance is given to the commercial structure and organization. On the national market, a sales network is organized that is able to efficiently serve both retail customers and clothing manufacturers.
In order to increase market penetration, it was decided to enhance the number of "sectoral events" of those years.
LABAM obtains a special recognition of merit from the Italian Chamber of Commerce, as it habitually exports its articles to many European and Extra-European countries. The socio-cultural crisis arrives that changes consumer habits. Much of what was valid up to that point will no longer be valid for years to come.
Many things also change radically in the fashion environment: the lines of the garments are simplified, the snap buttons, together with the zippers, in many cases replace the traditional buttons. The contemporary birth of the ecological and animal rights movements put the fur garment sector in serious difficulty, difficulties that force many companies in the sector to close their factories. Thus, all the work related to the production of the refined and rich buttons for fur has been missed.
After 20 years of success on the international market, LABAM accuses the crisis deriving from socio-cultural changes considerably. However, this period does not make Mr. Cavalca lose heart, who decides to start a deep diversification of his production, albeit always within the Fashion accessory sector.
In the previous decade LABAM had introduced particular items that had not yet been seen on the market, therefore this production of resin components for Bijoux and embroidery was extended, quickly finding exciting market outcomes. This is where the story of Resina Bijoux was born, which is still common today, revised in colors, models, materials and styles.
LABAM is in the expansion phase; the number of employees increased and between 1970 and 1972 the company area doubled, thus reaching 1000 covered square meters.
LABAM increases its participation in sector fairs by introducing the Macef fair in Milan.
Based on market responses, it was decided to favor Plexiglass as the reference raw material and to start investing significant economic resources in specific machinery for its processing and finishing; the aim is to obtain the highest possible quality at a reasonable cost.
The LABAM collection begins to take on significant dimensions, and being truly original and innovative accessories, they stand out in the market.
The 1977 led to the meeting with a famous French designer, internationally renowned, with whom began an active and exciting collaboration that saw LABAM in the role of exclusive producer of numerous lines of accessories signed by the Parisian designer and distributed all over the world.
LABAM moved its headquarters from Parma to Basilicagoiano (Montechiarugolo), a small town about ten kilometers away from the city. The covered area reaches 3000 square meters. The covered area reaches 3000 square meters. From that moment LABAM can reason and move as a real industrial company. The organization, planning and management of the work takes on a precise and articulated structure.
The early 1980s saw LABAM no longer engage sporadically as in previous years, but articulated and planned, in the sector of resin accessories for leather goods and footwear. It has been significantly implemented the dedicated sample collection and large investments have been made in the modeling and stylistic department.
The first seasons mainly served to overcome the initial reluctance of leather goods manufacturers towards a type of item never used before in their sector. During the fairs of these years, amazed customers stop to observe the LABAM exhibition area, wondering how to use certain such special accessories. After overcoming the initial obstacles, our accessories for leather goods and footwear have obtained an excellent appreciation and have since been continuously present in the collections of numerous international fashion brands.
LABAM is increasingly international: thus, decides to invest in participation in exhibition events in Extra-European countries; in fact, it exhibits its samples in Japan (Tokyo and Osaka), in Hong Kong and in America.
LABAM faces up to large investments in machinery and the establishment reaches a remarkable industrial capacity. Therefore, more and more specialized figures are sought and introduced; the 2 production shifts are no longer sufficient to guarantee the promised deliveries to customers.
The growing market demands oblige an expansion of the production installation; 6000 covered square meters are reached.
The sample collection is always wider, our revolutionary items are selected to give character to the bags of the biggest fashion houses.
Here is the first crisis of the millennium.
The sector slowed down sharply in these first years of the millennium. In these years, technical articles have also been used to embellish the hats of the most prestigious companies in the production district. All the useful movements are put in place to consolidate our own market. Targeted investments are established, suitable to increase the potential of the company. We realize that despite the size now reached by our company, we operate in an extremely "strong-willed" sector, in which managing a "flexible" company can be decisive, capable of being able to better face and adapt quickly to the needs of a constantly evolving market.
The "research and development" department, for the study and development of specific materials and colors, is reorganized and put in direct contact with the "modeling and prototyping" department, which in turn works in symbiosis with the department "Style" composed of three designers who work in a precise communion of intent. It is important to highlight how the style department, in addition to developing LABAM samples, works in harmony with the designers of our primary customers, to develop together with them specific accessories to be included in their collections.
In this period important investments in equipment aimed at the modernization of the Mechanical Workshop for the realization of steel molds are essential, essential for the realization of our articles. Three numerically controlled multi-axis machining centers equipped with CAD / CAM systems and relative readers are combined and flanked with the existing traditional machinery.
This operation allowed us to be totally autonomous throughout the entire production cycle, and consequently to be more timely and to directly monitor each phase of the production process, without taking the risk that "prying eyes" can see our models and prototypes. The reorganization of the workshop required the construction of a special room; the same thing happened to find the space needed to file the thousands of molds currently operating. Afterwards, the semi-finished products warehouse also underwent a considerable expansion.
After the success achieved by the creation of vintage LABAM in previous years; the 2009, the year of the Foundation's 60th Anniversary, brings LABAM to support the requests of an increasing number of customers, who invited to the programmed presence on the territory in order to create exclusive compositions and develop dedicated projects directly on site: LABAM project was born.
In 2012 the original item LABAM code 29382 has been exhibited at the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York.
From this moment it will become a model of inspiration for various designers and fashion houses.
Important sectoral suction and filtering systems are installed and implemented.
The scrupulous development of the company structure continues unceasingly and with determination; the aim is always to better interpret and serve the market. The molding department is equipped with a complete range of machinery, which is able to produce articles of various sizes, from the "ball" for embroidery to the "large handle" for bags.
Consequently, also all departments and machinery for the various stages of processing and finishing are related to these needs.
The sensibility towards the waste and the global pollution has led to the birth of "LABAM GREEN", a project in which in the last decade LABAM has faced major investments aimed at the efficient modernization of the entire production site. These include the choice of biodegradable oils and lubricants above 90%, the introduction of a new heating system that reduces gas, energy and consequent emissions consumption, the installation of automated fire-fighting systems, the installation of various centralized suction systems with fume reduction, the purchase of important automated systems and machinery, minimizing the waste of electricity, the installation of complex recirculation and water purification systems and the conspicuous reduction of noise emissions, up to total waste management, with the aim of reducing any possible negative effect on the environment.
Continuing the line taken, LABAM puts in place the refurbishment of the roofs of 2 sheds: Workshop and Mold Warehouse. The previous roof covering is replaced to create a modern thermo-insulated roof, in which the surface used as a skylight has been increased. The final insulation has allowed us to achieve a significant improvement in energy efficiency.
LABAM celebrates the 70th year of the Foundation. Each department is implemented with the purchase of new machinery.
We are thus to 2025, LABAM is a company specialized in the production of Fashion Accessories in resin, obtained with an industrial process but with the handmade aspect of the handmade. Production currently focuses on around 30,000 (thirty thousand) items. LABAM actively collaborates with many brands on the international fashion scene and takes part in numerous international trade fairs. The total production site is now around 10,000 square meters covered over an area of about 40,000 square meters.
